KRG offers condolences for US soldier killed in Peshmerga operation
In the early morning hours of October 22, 2015, a Kurdish-led operation freed 69 hostages from a prison operated by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) near the city of Hawija, following on intelligence that they faced imminent mass execution. The operation was conducted by the General Directorate of Counter Terrorism with support from US forces.
This operation saved 69 lives and deals a blow to ISIS in an area under its control and illustrates the close cooperation between Kurdish and American forces.
We share in America’s grief for its fallen soldier, Master Sergeant Joshua Wheeler. His sacrifice is a tragedy for his family and friends but we hope they can find some solace in knowing that he died in the course of an operation that saved the lives of so many. We offer our heartfelt gratitude and condolences.
With our allies in the United States and the Global Coalition, the Peshmerga of the Kurdistan Region remain on the front lines against ISIS. The savagery of these terrorists has no place in this world, and we will continue in our campaign to destroy this barbaric organization.
