Senior KRG delegation in Washington to discuss future of Kurdistan

Washington, DC, USA (us.gov.krd) – The Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council H.E. Masrour Barzani and theSPC_3155 Chief of Staff to the President of the Kurdistan Region H.E. Dr. Fuad Hussein met Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday to reaffirm the longstanding relationship between Kurdistan and the United States and discuss post-ISIS political and security challenges in Iraq.

In the meeting Chancellor Barzani thanked the US Government for its support to Kurdistan and the Peshmerga in the fight against ISIS. He said, “We will remain your partner in the fight against international terrorism.”

The delegation, which is accompanied by KRG Representative to the United States Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, is in Washington to update senior officials at the Department of State, Department of Defense, White House, and Congress about recent political and military developments in Iraq and beyond; the anti-ISIS campaign in Mosul and American engagement in Iraq.

They will also brief leading Washington academics and journalists on the situation in Kurdistan and the future of governance in Iraq.

Since 2014, United States forces have provided air support to Kurdistan’s Peshmerga Forces in the fight against ISIS. Today, they are helping train and equip Peshmerga units in counter-terrorism.SPC_3159

At the State Department the delegation also met Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Stuart Jones, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iraq Joseph Pennington, and Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Jonathan Cohen

Chancellor Barzani and Dr Hussein met with Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Elissa Slotkin at the Pentagon to discuss increasing US military support to Kurdistan’s Peshmerga.

The delegation met a number of leading think tank experts and academics, including at a roundtable discussion at the Center for American Progress. They also met separately with Dr Walid Phares, who advises President-elect Donald Trump on Middle East policy.

The delegation met with Congresswoman-elect Liz Cheney and Congressman-elect Mike Gallagher.
